I wrote Beyond the Blue because I am a psychotherapist and I want to help people manage their emotional distress. Mental healthcare is often inaccessible to large swathes of the population, so if I can help more people via this book, all the better for society.
One significant group who access mental healthcare the least is the Male Labelled. We condition the Male Labelled to remain silent about their emotional distress, and so mental healthcare ends up being viewed as unavailable or inadequate for their needs. When you consider the higher rates of suicide and trauma amongst the Male Labelled, this is a worrying trend. Add to that structural obstacles to mental healthcare such as racism, transphobia, biphobia or homophobia, and the picture looks even more bleak. We cannot achieve a healthy, safe society for all if we leave depression, anxiety, relationship conflict and trauma untreated. And we cannot offer adequate mental healthcare if we only view the Male Labelled as a homogenous group, a binary opposite to the Female Labelled. This Survival Guide takes us Beyond the Blue of the Male Label, offering an insight into the diverse reality beneath the Male Label. It is only with this insight can we truly understand how to survive and thrive, despite the challenges posed by depression, anxiety, relationship conflict and anger, and trauma. Let’s go Beyond the Blue of the Male Label, so we can achieve a healthier, safer society for all. Beyond the Blue is due for release in October 2021, and I will shortly release a link to pre-order your copy. Book release - October 20218/26/2021 I have some exciting news to share with you.
My book, Beyond the Blue: A Survival Guide for the Male Labelled, and a Healthier Society for All, will be published later this year. If you haven’t seen me for the last year, or I have been staring absent-mindedly into the distance and barely registered you, that is why! Beyond the Blue is very dear to my heart, and it has been forming since 1988, when my Uncle Gavin died by suicide. Ever since then, I have wanted to help those who are least likely to get help. The rates of suicide and trauma are the highest amongst the Male Labelled, yet they are the least likely to access mental healthcare. This is even more significant when the Male Label intersects with other aspects, such as a person’s racial or ethnic identity, their true gender identity, and their sexuality. Untreated depression, anxiety, and trauma poses a risk for all of us in society.
